Following this post and that post, today, Friday 14 March 2008, is π day.
Quoting from Wikipedia:
“It is an irrational number, which means that its decimal expansion never ends or repeats. Indeed: beyond being irrational, it is a transcendental number, which means that no finite sequence of algebraic operations on integers (powers, roots, sums, etc.) could ever produce it.”
Why not celebrate by dividing 22 sweets between 7 people?

Man Ray Chess

Just back from the Man Ray, Picabia and Duchamp exhibition at the Tate Modern, where amongst other things, the chess sets by Man Ray caught my eye. The three friends were played chess regularly {Duchamp was an excellent chess player} and there were a number of sets on display. I googled ‘Man Ray chess set’ and found images of the metallic versions (above – it appears the last one on the open market went for $12,000) but the wooden ones were really the ones I coveted. I will keep looking.

As well as being a chairophile, I am also a bibliophile. {Chairs and books seem to be naturally complementary addictions.} Consequently here is the font Los Niches by Juan Pablo de Gregorio, which has been chosen by Typographica as one of the best fonts of 2007.

I took this photograph, semi-accidentally; I had come across the scrawled name of a 1930s Evelyn Waugh novel quite unexpectedly. Whilst taking the photo, in the back roads of an industrial estate, a woman and her dog walked by.
