 Bowness Fake Books Wallpaper

The front cover of Grand Designs magazine has a great image of a room covered in a ‘fake books’ wallpaper. And although there was no reference to who the wallpaper is by, I was pretty sure I have seen it somewhere before. That somewhere was on Deborah Bowness’ site, the fantastic wallpaper creator who as well as this paper, also makes ones with fake clothes, fake filing cabinets, fake chairs and fake lamps – well, not so much fake as trompe d’oeil …

Luke Dubois Hindsight

Even though ‘I am not an American’, I am somewhat obsessed with US politics (trajectory: All The President’s Men, JFK and of course, The West Wing) and loved this piece of artwork. Hindsight is Always 20/20 (2007) by Luke Dubois crosses the technology of eyetests, with a count of the keywords in each President’s State of the Union address. It’s all about vision. The one above is, yeap, G. W. Bush. It does seem to capture something … although what that something is, is food for thought …..

Kid A Shoes
This was a random shot I took of an old pair of Kid A’s shoes, before they moved to another little person’s feet. Very little, and a little beautiful.

Hats, Hats, Hats

Freemantle Hat
Oh the hat! I am a fierce personal campaigner for the hat, a much neglected item in contemporary everyday dress. I am frequently distracted by Vogue’s vintage hat patterns when looking to make a new dress. And then there was the time I walked past the wonderful Isabella Blow in the foyer of Claridges, gloriously bedecked in a Philip Treacy hat and Alexander McQueen dress – stunning. Although I sadly often drag a trilby over my head, I really should be doing the school run in one of Sahar Freemantle’s designs.

Lace Topologies

Wilson Topologies
This photograph is a section of ‘Topologies’ by Anne Wilson, whose work currently forms part of the V&A Out of the Ordinary exhibition, which I was fortunate enough to see a few weeks ago. It is beautifully intricate lacework and surprisingly dark and menacing – I kept seeing it as a lacework abstraction of the Chapman brothers’ ‘Disasters of War‘, their 1993 recreation of miniature battle scenes inspired by Goya.
